Gaddafi, Kadafi, or Qaddafi? Why is the Libyan leader’s name spelled so many different ways?

Take a look at any news source today and you’ll see the name of Libya’s de facto leader, Muammar al-Gaddafi. Look a little closer and you’ll see a multitude of spellings for the notorious politician’s surname such as Gaddafi, Kadafi and Qaddafi. Why does a name that has been making headlines for decades have so many varied spellings?

Transliteration is the reason – the transcription of a word, or in this case a name, into corresponding letters of another alphabet. Written Arabic is oftentimes unvocalized – in other words the vowels are rarely written out and must be furnished by a reader familiar with the language. As with Chinese and Hindi, the Arabic script contains a copious amount of diacritics – dots and accents added to a letter to change the sound. Add to this, there seems to be an absence of any sort of authority for transliterating Arabic names.

The Arabic language is one of the most widely spoken Semitic languages in the world and the pronunciation of words may vary with different linguistic varieties of the language. Even among Arabic speakers, Arabic of North Africa is often incomprehensible to an Arabic speaker from the Gulf Region.

A famous roadblock for any Arabic to English translator is the Arabic pronunciation of the letter “G,” as in “good.” Since such a sound does not exist in the Arabic language, the first letter of “Gaddafi” can be replaced with a “q”, “k” or “gh” sound. This helps to explain the numerous interpretations for “Gaddafi.”

The variation of spelling may depend on what news source you choose to gather your information from. The Associated Press and CNN favor “Gadhafi”, The New York Times spells it “el-Qaddafi” and the Los Angeles Times uses “Kadafi.” Interestingly, Al Jazeera, which uses “Gaddafi”, does not use the “el” article in the name while the New York Times does.

Okudzeto-Ablakwa: Red alert is to protect Ghanaians from war-mongers

The Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudjeto-Ablakwa has explained that the Security red alert issued by the President in his State of the Nation address to Pprliament last Thursday, is to assure the public of government's resolve to provide full protection from any individual or group of persons who would like to jeopardize the security of the state.

Mr. Okudzeto-Ablakwa said the President had nothing to hide when he made those statements but to re-affirm his commitment to protect the citizens of the country.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the security agencies have been empowered to arrest anybody who threatens the security of the entire nation by whatever means.

According to him, even though some reasonable persons within the NPP are reported to have advised Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to withdraw his “all die be die” comment and apologize to the nation, he has refused to do so.

“The whole matter of ‘all die be die’ would have died if Nana Addo had apologized” he stressed.

Mr. Ablakwa told host of Dwaso Nsem Adakabre Frimpong Manso that the Communications Director of Nana Addo’s 2008 campaign team, Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy is reported to have advised Nana Addo in a newspaper article, to apologize for igniting the youth but the flagbearer is yet to do so.

“Those who fail to understand the President’s statement on Red Alert are definitely those who are jeopardizing the security of the nation”.

“Politicians should be mindful of what they say because honestly most Ghanaians feel unsafe ahead of the elections”, the Deputy Information Minister emphasized.

Meanwhile, the 2008 Communications Director of Nana Addo’s Campaign team, Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy has denied ever calling on Nana Addo to apologize.

Dr. Arthur Kennedy explained that what he said in the said article which was published in the Ghanaian Chronicle and Daily Guide newspapers titled “Hypocrisy in politics”, was to urge Nana Akuffo-Addo to come out and explain vividly what he meant by the “all die be die” comment, which he did in his press conference in Ho on Monday.

Arthur Kennedy stressed that the President failed to exhibit good leadership by putting the security on red alert.

Linguistic Expert: Non documented languages will soon fade out

The Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana Legon, Prof. Kofi Agyekum says the non documented Ghanaian languages are on the verge of fading out, if proper measures are not taken to preserve and promote them.

The United Nations has estimated that about half of the world’s 6,000 languages are endangered and might fade out.

But Prof. Agyakum, popularly known as “Opanyin Agyakum” says out of the 45 of the about 200 languages in Ghana documented, only 11 are taught in the classroom.

He therefore warned that many languages in the country may soon collapse.

Opanyin Agyekum in an interview on Adom News suggested that the educational system should be reviewed, to make way for the compulsory teaching of local languages at the Senior High Schools.

He said “it is virtually nonsense” for the education system to require a pass in English as a basis in entering the tertiary level.

He tasked the media, especially radio stations to have a special bulletin for local language.

The Linguistics Expert says Ghanaians should be proud of their language and encourage their children to study their mother tongues.

Meanwhile the Kontihene of Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, Nana Boamponsem admits that the “Bono” language may soon fade out because the Chiefs do not speak the language.

He says most people are not proud of their language hence very soon the language will collapse.

Information Minister: Akufo-Addo is desperate to be president

The Minister of Information, John Akologo Tia has described the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party as a frustrated and desperate person who does not merit his position as the leader of the main opposition group.

Mr. Tia stressed that Nana Akufo-Addo’s “war-mongering” statement was made out of frustration and a refusal to accept the fact that he has already lost the 2012 elections in advance.

"He should realize that he is not the only person who wants to be President in Ghana. Is the NPP the only political party in the country which is contesting the presidential elections? Why should he use words like 'all die be die'? He is only desperate because his days in politics are numbered," the Information Minister declared.

John Tia defended President Mills’ comment on Nana’s ‘all die be die’ statement explaining that, as the President who is responsible for Ghanaians' wellbeing and peace he is mandated to reply Nana Akufo-Addo.

“The President took an oath to defend the nation; he is also the father of the country so the President is responsible for the security of the nation,” Mr. Tia told Adakabre Frimpong Manso host of Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday.

He said the President was not reacting to any mere statement but was responding to issues concerning the security of the nation.

“President Mills is the father of the nation so if any group or individual wants to disturb the peace of the nation, he has the right to wake up and tell them,” he emphasized.

The Information Minister noted that the President’s choice of words such as “war mongering, evil doers” were right in replying the "desperate" flagbearer of the NPP.

He said ever since Nana Addo made those statements he never explained the meaning of those words and has never apologized.

Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akufo-Adoo is expected to meet the Press on Monday at the Freedom Hotel in Ho, to respond to President Mills’ State of the Nation Address.

NO CASE OF GUINEA WORM RECORDED SINCE MAY 2010

The National Programme Manager of Ghana Guinea Worm Eradication Programme (GGWEP) Dr. Andrew Seidu Korkor has disclosed that since May 2010 the country has not recorded any report of guinea worm cases.
He explains that the eight month absence does not mean the country is guinea- free but the GGWEP is monitoring the situation will come out with the records after 14 month.
Dr Andrew Korkor says Ghana has moved from second position to fifth position in the world making Sudan, Mali, and Burkina Faso leaders in the world records.
Dr. Korkor said the success story to the attainment of such dramatic reduction of the disease was that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the GGWEP did respond swiftly to the situation by not only intensifying all programme interventions to contain the situation but also worked with the district assemblies and partners to improve water supply to the townships of all endemic areas.
He explained that the disease was now limited to few spots in the Northern Region, particularly in the central Gonja District but since access to and use of potable water was not universal, the risk of re-infection could not be ruled out until the last case had been detected and contained.
"The major challenge is how to ensure a national awareness and maintaining vigilance to recognise and report any suspicious case to the health authorities for immediate investigation and containment as well as continue to improve water supply for the risk and endemic areas", Dr. Korkor said.

Speaking on Adom news he said what needed to be done was to continue and step up surveillance nation-wide to detect and report, promptly and properly manage all suspected cases to ensure full containment, continue a nation-wide awareness creation among health staff and the people and continue to advocate for safe drinking water.

I’M QUITTING CHURCH TO JOIN THE ANC

I would like to confess that I have decided that I will stop going to church. I mean, who needs to go to church in order to go to heaven when all you have to do is produce an ANC membership?

I would like to say sorry to my dear pastors at God First Church, but it appears there is an easier way to go through the Pearly Gates. It involves no tithes, no offerings and most importantly, it means I no longer have to drag myself out of bed every morning after a night out partying on a Saturday. Praise the ANC!

One of the benefits of joining the broad church (as it is often called, a broad church, not a narrow one) of the African National Congress is that it pays to be a card-carrying member. Who knows what tenders could be coming your way? Just look at how many well-off ANC members are out there. Oh, hang on. A vast majority of them also aren’t. This debunks my theory.

As some of you may or may not know, there has been a great deal of controversy after the president of the ANC and the country, Jacob Zuma, said to supporters in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape: "When you vote for the ANC, you are also choosing to go to heaven. When you don't vote for the ANC you should know that you are choosing that man who carries a fork...who cooks people...

"When you are carrying an ANC membership card, you are blessed. When you get up there, there are different cards used but when you have an ANC card, you will be let through to go to heaven."

Anger

I wonder who will take St Peter’s place at the Pearly Gates. Could it be Saint Comrade Manto Tshabalala-Msimang or will she be holding that position until Saint Comrade Julius Malema departs Earth to assume what I believe is his rightful position? Saint Comrade Julius Malema wouldn’t be too shy to tell those people who aren’t card-carrying ANC members that they are being tjatjarag and should just go jump and have an encounter with that man who carries a fork and cooks people instead.

As to be expected, anger was presented in many shapes and forms. From the religious to the not so religious - even atheists were indignant. I was most amused by the irony of atheists who were offended on God’s behalf by Zuma’s comments.

Many of us simply cannot wait for the president to say something of colour. I’ll be honest, when I read his comments, I was thrilled because there was something to laugh about. Seriously now guys, the president meant that as a joke, but he probably took it a bit too far. (I’m not just saying this to ensure that I get into heaven because I don’t want to offend Pope Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma lest I don’t get a pass to heaven.)

Joking

The guy was obviously joking. I can imagine the audience went a little crazy with much laughter when he said what he said. Black folk are a religious bunch, and the people who were there are no exception, I am sure. So they knew he was joking and laughed. I know he was joking, which is why I am joking about it too.

I’m hoping joking about it is not blaspheming against the ANC. The last thing I want is to be excommunicated from the ANC before I have even had the chance to join. Again. I will become a member so that I can worship at the altar of the tender. And I would be attending the broad church meetings of the ANC in a German luxury BEE mobile.

I have a few suggestions on how we should pray now. How about we go, “In the name of the ANC, the Communist Party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions,” when we start praying? Instead of ending our prayers with an “amen”, I think “Amandla!” would be most appropriate.

I’ll tell you something for free, the great thing about “Amandla!” is that it is powerful, forceful and unapologetic. Amandla means power. Whereas “Amen” is a very passive, “may it be so”.

Thanks for the laughs

The truth is we got hysterical over nothing. We wanted to have something to shout about. Personally, I found something to laugh about. I think God has a far greater sense of humour than we give him credit for. A comedian couldn’t have come up with what the president said. Thanks for the laughs Mr President. Or should I say, Pope?

Just to end off here, ladies, if you go out with me, you will go to heaven.

As you were. That is all.

NO COMPENSATION FOR LOAD SHEDDING SAYS GRIDCO

The Public Relations Officer of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Albert Quainoo says the company is not obliged to compensate anyone or any community to be affected by the planned (Electrify) load shedding which is scheduled to begin from February 5 to March 12.

Mr. Quainoo tells Adom News that the exercise is in the interest of the entire nation and therefore no one can insist that compensation should be paid.

This is against the earlier position stated by the PURC that anyone who is able to produce enough evidence to show that they have experienced a loss due to the power outage will be compensated.

Albert Quainoo says only a few communities will be affected by the outage in Accra and Tema.

He explains that that the exercise is to enable the Company to add a new transmission line to the existing three transmission lines serving Accra and its environs from Tema.

GRIDCo says it had obtained US$1.5 million to string the fourth transmission line from the main switchyard in Tema into the Achimota substation to increase power transfer and reliability to the city of Accra and beyond.

NAB TO CLOSE DOWN ILLEGAL PRE-UNIVERSITIES

The Public Relations Officer at the National Accreditation Board, Richard Adjei has disclosed that some of the illegal pre-universities might be forced to close down if they do not get the necessary requirement to perform their duties.
He says they have written to the education ministry and are waiting for the green light to take the necessary action.
Richard Adjei says it’s not the first time they have come out to caution the public about the illegality of Pre-University programmes.
He explains that the certificates awarded are not a requirement for entrance to the various universities in the country.
He made these comments when a group known as the National Youth Leadership Forum called on President Mills to sack the management at the National Accreditation Board (NAB) because they find them incompetent.
The interim president of the group, Prince Osei Tutu said they do not fit their offices; he described them as incompetent, impotent and incapable of the duty assigned them.

Mr Adjei advises individuals seeking to enter such pre-universities to cross check with the board to ascertain whether they have been accredited to run like tertiary institutions.
