The battle for Tripoli, African Union hypocrisy

Just recently a huge sum of about 1.7 billion dollars was announced as the ‘prize’ for the capture of Muammar Gaddafi, dead or Alive. The story was a shock to the world a man who just handed over his AU presidency to his successor is now a prize for his capture. Surprisingly, the rebel leadership has been offered a $2m bounty on the fugitive Libyan leader's head.
As the battle for Tripoli trickles in every now then, one would expect the African Union to cough out their stand on the issues in Libya. Of course, it takes bold countries like Nigeria and South Africa to take the bitter pill by stating their stand on the crisis in Libya.
One of the ideologies of the African Union is to maintain peace and harmony among members’ states but one will understand that many lives could have been saved if the African Union had made their intention known to the world.
The time is ticking for the African Union to take a stem stand on the issues in Libya.
Gaddafi’s influence
The AU waiting position on Libya gives a clear indication of Gadaffi’s influence among member states. Most of the African Presidents enjoys some benefits from the Libyan Oil either from financing their political campaign or help them retain power.
Gaddafi ran a school near Benghazi called the World Revolutionary Center (WRC). A notable number of its graduates have seized power in African countries. Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso and Idriss Déby of Chad were graduates of this school, and are currently in power in their respective countries.
He was bestowed with the title "King of Kings of Africa" in 2008, as he had remained in power longer than any African king. Gaddafi was celebrated in the presence of over 200 African traditional rulers and kings, although his views on African political and military unification received a lukewarm response from their governments Gaddafi told the assembled African leaders when he was elected the President of the AU that he shall continue to insist that our sovereign countries work to achieve the United States of Africa. Guess that did not go down well with member states!

Capture him by spelling his name
There seems to be many ways which the 69 year old man desert warrior name has been spelt. Research from the London Evening Standard in 2004 indicates that there are about 37 possible spelling of his name.
Let take a look at some of the names given to him;
"Muammar Gaddafi" is the spelling used by TIME, BBC News, but The Associated Press, CNN, and Fox News use "Moammar Gadhafi".
The Edinburgh Middle East Report uses "Mu'ammar Qaddafi" and the U.S. Department of State uses "Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi", although the White House chooses to use "Muammar el-Qaddafi"
China’s Xinhua News Agency uses "Muammar Khaddafi" while The New York Times uses "Muammar el-Qaddafi".
The Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times of the Tribune Company, and Agence France-Presse use "Moammar Kadafi".
In 1986 Gaddafi reportedly responded to a Minnesota school's letter in English using the spelling "Moammar El-Gadhafi but the title of his homepage of algathafi.org reads "Welcome to the official site of Muammar Al Gathafi . Again in 2007 interview with Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi confirms that the spelling "Qadhafi’’

Changing your thinking

If your thoughts could cause things to instantly happen, what kind of thoughts would you think?

If your values and priorities were to be continually manifested in the world around you, what values and priorities would you choose?

The fact is your thoughts, your values and your priorities most certainly have a major influence on the quality of your world and your life. Though you cannot instantly make something appear just by thinking about it, the things that do end up appearing in your life often do so as a result of your thoughts.

Your thoughts directly control your actions, and your actions have a major impact on the reality of your life. When you feed your moments with positive, loving, thankful thoughts, your life and your world cannot help but benefit.

The quickest way to improve your situation is to improve the way you think about it. Though your thoughts will not immediately change anything outside of you, they can immediately change your outlook.

And by adopting an affirmative, creative, grateful outlook on life, you receive a double benefit. Your actions become more focused on creating value and at the same time, they become more effective.

Changing your thinking can indeed change your world. So choose the best thoughts that you can possibly imagine.

By changing your thinking; you change your beliefs.

When you change your beliefs, you change your expectations.
When you change your expectations, you change your attitude.
When you change your attitude, you change your behaviour.
When you change your behaviour, you change your performance.
When you change your performance, you change your life!

EX-CONVICT URGE GOVERNMENT TO HELP INTEGRATE PRISONERS

An ex-convict turned teacher is calling on the government to address the issue of integrating them back into the society because they have challenges getting back to normal life after serving their sentence.
Benjamin Raphael is an ex-convict who spent six years behind bars and he tells Adom News most ex-convicts find it very difficult to live a ‘normal’ life especially because their families are not ready to support them.
He thinks Ghana Prison Service should set up ex-convicts association for ex-convicts to be properly reintegrated into society and monitored.

Another ex-convict Nana Kwame Fynn who spent over five years behind bars suggested that the government should pay attention to them because due to the hard conditions in the country they are also tempted to go back to their old ways.
Nana Kwame Fynn spoke with Adom news.

It has come to light that Ex-convicts have invaded Abossey Okai and other parts of Accra.
But the Police Divisional Commander for Kaneshie, Chief Supt. Avadechi says the police have a duty to monitor ex-convicts but they do not know the exact figures of ex-convicts and where they are in Ghana right now.
Chief Public Relations Officer of Ghana Prison Service, ASP Courage Akyem tells Adom News the duty of the service to prisoners end when they are released and it is the duty of the Social Welfare Department to reintegrate them into society.
Acting Director of Social Welfare Department, Mr. Stephen Adongo tells Adom News the department has documented plans to reintegrate ex-convicts but has no resources to implement them.
Mr. Adongo says the department does not have money and the personnel to carry out the reintegration programmes for Ex-convicts.
He says the budgetary allocation for the Department last year was GHC213,178.30, which is woefully inadequate for their mainstream operations let alone reintegrating ex-convicts into society.

Mr. Adongo also blames the family members of the Ex-convicts for refusing to accept them, and that causes the ex-convicts to return to their old ways.
He says Social Welfare will soon embark on educational campaign for the family members to accept the people who have finished serving their prison sentences.

EXHIBITORS THREATENS TO BOYCOTT GHANA TRADE FAIR

Exhibitors at the on-going 15th Ghana International Trade Fair have lamented the poor patronage by the public. According to some of the exhibitors, they might not register in subsequent fairs if ‘administers to not wake from their sleep’.

They attribute it to poor publicity by the organizers. The fair, an opportunity for exhibitors to conduct brisk business, has been on-going for the past four days but has recorded little or no impact.

Some of the exhibitors who spoke to Adom News blamed the Ghana Trade Fair Company for not doing enough to advertise the event.

They claim huge amounts of money were charged by the organizers without putting measures in place for them to plough back their investments.

Some of the patrons were also critical of the exhibitors. One of the patrons said exhibitors think the fair is only about selling, but sometimes it's an opportunity to advertise their products and to establish business contact, he added.
Exhibitors also lamented the GHC2 tickets gate proceeds stating that the tickets drive customers and investors away.
Sellers do not patronize the fair because of the sale of tickets at the gate, one exhibitor stressed.
Most of them go to the shopping Mall and other shops to purchase goods and products.

Meanwhile, the Chief Marketing Officer of the Ghana Trade Fair Center Yaw Seth Asamoah confirmed the low patronage but explains that management will be meeting with stakeholders to revamp the fair.
Commenting about the gate proceeds charged at the gates, Mr Asamoah stated that due to the high cost of electricity and other amenities at the venue they have been forced to charge gate fees.
According to him, the trade fair will virtually collapse it the company decides to make it free.
However, he states that management is considering abolishing the gate proceeds at the gate and that they will rather increase the cost of participation at the pavilions.

MY LIFE WITH HIV

I will call myself Nomsa Motha*. It is not my real name and I will tell you why I do not reveal it. I am 32-year-old mother of two. I am living positively with HIV and AIDS. But I have one problem.

With many of us still battling with stigmatisation, I have had a hard time revealing my status to my in-laws.

My husband knows about my status and he is ok with it. But I worry about his relatives and whether they will accept me with the disease I am living with or if they might push him to leave me.

I already lost the father of my first child when I told him I was diagnosed with HIV. I found out about my status in 2004 when my second baby, a daughter I had with my first lover, died at three months.

I was devastated by her death. I had gotten so close to her and parting broke my heart. I had not suspected that she could have died of HIV. But at the hospital it was revealed that my baby was infected with HIV and had died of an HIV-related illness.

A terrifying revelation
The nurses and doctors advised me to go for HIV counselling and testing. I did and the result came back positive. I was still hurting and mourning my baby. The results just terrified me. I thought I was going to die just as she had.

Then I had to tell my partner about the HIV status and that it had taken our baby’s life. He walked out on me just when I needed his support. I was depressed.

Fortunately my family members were supportive. They were there for me throughout the grief of losing a baby and a partner.

The baby was later buried and my health began to deteriorate. I went for a tuberculosis (TB) test in a nearby clinic and the result came back positive. I thought that was it. It was just a matter of time before I got sick and eventually died, I told myself.

But I was surrounded with people who cared about my well being and they encouraged me to take my TB treatment so that I could start taking antiretroviral treatment (ART) afterward.

Powerful turning point
The turning point was the day I met a woman in the corridor of a local clinic. She took interest in me and I confided in her, revealing my status to her. She told me about a support group for people living with HIV and AIDS.

The name of the support group is Let Us Grow. It was founded by mum Rose. I went there and to my surprise I fell in love with it. I was uplifted because I had given up on life.

Mum Rose and the other members welcomed me with warm hearts. With time I got to understand HIV. Even though the counsellor had tried to explain to me what it meant to be HIV positive I just did not get it.

But here I was with people who were telling me that they were HIV positive and they were living happy lives. I guess I needed someone who could relate to me their stories of living with HIV.

That gave me a boost. I immediately became a new person. I changed my attitude. I wanted to live and it was my call to make the most of it.

I picked up the pieces. I got back on my feet. I started to live. I took care of my self. I got a boyfriend. I told him my status and he accepted me the way I am. Later we got married
My husband and I decided to have a baby. I had gathered that as long as we followed medical orders we could give birth to a healthy, HIV-negative baby. The grace of God was with us and the baby was born HIV-negative.

Now my work is to revive the life of those who think being HIV-positive is a curse; that there is no hope for them.

I tell them they are wrong. I am a living example.
