MTTU boss against diversions on Tema Motorway

The Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has blamed the various diversions on the Accra-Tema motorway as a contributing factor to the increasing accidents on the road.

Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi says the purpose of the motorway was not to create diversions but to rather serve as a link road between Accra and Tema for businesses and other activities.

He made these statements on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Monday when he visited the motorway to ascertain the extent of damage after three tipper trucks collided earlier Monday morning.

The accident had worsened the already bad traffic situation on the motorway and Superintendent Ansong-Dankyi said he and his team were trying to manage the situation.

According to him, erection of structures (both legal and illegal) and diversions on the motorway have defeated the purpose for which the road was constructed because they have paved the way for bicycle riders and other unauthorized persons to use it.

He urged the Ghana Highways Authority to close or block all the diversions and halt the illegal developments on the Motorway to ease the heavy traffic that builds up sometimes and also prevent accidents.

Superintendent Ansong-Dankyi also cautioned drivers to obey all traffic regulations especially with the rainy season reaching its peak adding that they should drive at the right speed limit to prevent deaths and injuries on the way.

The French teacher, Francis Kateh, was given 30 lashes on the back by the chief of Ejisu Besease, Nana Kwasi Akyeampong for allegedly smoking wee at a drinking spot where he (teacher) was drinking with three of his friends last Saturday.

His aggrieved colleagues say the assault is not only inhuman to the victim but it also denigrates the teaching profession.

The teachers indicated that though the Chief did not find wee on the teacher and his friends, he insisted that they had smoked the herbs.

But Nana Afranie Okese explained that has been a recent increase number of student smoking Indian hemp in the public. He noted he has personally seen some group of students smoking at backyard of the palace.

Commenting on how he is going to reduce the menace in the area, he stressed that many times the Police find it difficult to get the necessary evidence to arrest the criminals.

NACOB deserves autonomy to be more effective – Ex-National Security boss

A former National Security Coordinator, Mr. K.B. Quantson, has supported the Narcotics Control Board’s (NACOB) demand to be granted autonomy. NACOB is presently part of the Interior Ministry. According to Mr. Quantson, NACOB would work more effectively and efficiently if government grants them autonomy since they do not seem to be doing much now to fight the increasing drugs menace. NACOB has submitted a draft law to the Attorney General’s Department seeking autonomy from the Interior Ministry.

The head of Communications at the Board, Francis Opoku Amoah, who spoke on PM Express on Multi TV, disclosed that NACOB was facing a lot of challenges, most of them financial and logistical, in its fight against the trafficking and use of drugs. He attributed the financial constraints to the inability of NACOB to generate funds internally adding if they are granted autonomy, they would be given their own budgetary allocation which will give them a lot of resources to work with. He added that the Board also wanted to be clothed with powers to confiscate assets of drug dealers and the right to carry arms. “I believe that if that law is approved it’s going to give us the power to carry arms because we know that in certain parts of Africa, in Nigeria and other places, the Narcotics Control over there, they are armed and therefore we’re hoping that when it is passed all these things will help us make sure that the fight on the drug menace is upped.” And Mr. Quantson has expressed his whole-hearted support for the proposals.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Wednesday, the security capo said because of its limited resources, the Board is not able to sometimes pursue cases to its conclusion, giving room for guilty people to go scot free. He also advocated that the Board be empowered to prosecute its own cases to help prevent manipulation of the system and ensure that drug traffickers are not let off.

Mr. Quantson said the judicial system had been corrupted from the bottom resulting in delays in judgement adding there had been instances where the judiciary had been manipulated to free drug barons while some judges, out of greed, collect bribes and allow guilty people to go free. He claimed that he had personally witnessed a case where the culprit should have been imprisoned for five years but was only fined and freed by the judge. Mr. K.B. Quantson stressed that the drug menace has a direct negative effect on the economy therefore the government should make sure it does it possible best to clamp down the menace one of them being granting NACOB autonomy to make them more effective. Politics and Cocaine Mr. Quantson also shared his views on the brouhaha surrounding recent comments by the NACOB boss, Yaw Akrasi Sarpong that some politicians intended to use drug money to fund campaigns for the 2012 elections. He stated that lack of effective monitoring mechanisms into the funding of political parties has created the room for suspicion while the amount of money political parties spend on campaigning raises question marks about their sources of funding. He conceded that even though investors and businessmen may sponsor the parties, the lavish scale on which they run their campaign leaves much to be desired adding that he suspects that some of the funds must be coming from ‘under the bag’.

Mr. Quantson called for some mechanisms to monitor elections expenditure of political parties while a ceiling should be placed on the expenditure of political parties so that when they exceed it, they can be open to auditing and investigations and that will also ensure that the country’s democracy is not undermined by criminals and drug barons. The security expert said any government that wants to really clamp down on the drugs trade and use must have a strong political will to put in place the right legislative instruments to check it.

Mr. Quantson also urged all hands to be on deck to help win the war against narcotics since it was not only the problem of government or the security agencies. He suggested that citizen education must be increased so people can appreciate the enormity of the situation and the role they have to play in bringing it down. He also urged the media to assist in the fight against drugs by exposing traffickers and asking the pertinent questions that would bring results.

WORLD BANK CONDITIONALITY DOES NOT HALT PROJECTS

The World Bank Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management in African Region, Marcelo Giugale says World Bank conditionalities on loans do not prevent governments from embarking their various projects.
He explains that conditionality on loans does not strictly work to force projects on government because the borrower (government) might be faced with other challenges after they received the loan which they might be tempted to redirect the funds to.
Mr. Marcelo Giugale noted that the idea of World Bank conditionality is almost a colonist idea which cannot be enforced in the new era of development.

5 UGLIEST SPORTS GAMES

I tuned on my television everyday to see a new type of sports been played. To my amazement, all these so-called sports have their stadia full to capacity. Sometimes I wonder if the organizers do not charge gate proceeds at every event. Well, to cut the long story short, I have listed my ugliest sports.
1. American Football
The American corrupted idea of British Football. My colleagues referred to it as ‘the Animal game’. The American football is a sport played between two teams of eleven with the objective of scoring points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone. It sounds so easy but the on the field of play, its looks nasty. All I can see is mature men misbehaving on the field in search of a ball. The American football happens to the only game where players wore protective materials to prevent injuries.
2. Baseball
Baseball, expert term is as Bat- and -Ball game. But I call it the hit-and-run game. Scores are generated with the number of runs you take. This ugly game cannot be played in the bedroom because one must need some kind of protective guard.
3. Boxing
The so-call noble acts of protection-can ruin your live forever…trust me. If you doubt it ask the legendary Mohammed Ali. If it's wrong to allow two animals to tear into each other for people's amusement, it surely is equally contemptible to expect humans to pummel each other as well-Ishan Tharoor.
Why should you punch the face of your colleague just to score points? This is one of the few sports organizers can’t arrange for a ‘friendly’.
4. Bullfighting
The bloody sport is referred to as spectacle and a fine art. The bulls matadors are sometimes get kill to the amazement of the crowd. Since the dawn of civilization, human beings have entertained themselves by making animals fight. The fact that people still like to pit dogs and cocks against each other is proof of man's sadistic streak.- Ishan Tharoor.

5. Wrestling
The less you talk about it the better. Professional Wrestling refers in practice to "sports entertainment", where matches are 'worked' to an arranged outcome, as a result of staged combat. My mom cannot stand with the look at these professional wrestlers. No wonder they caution the people not practice what they see on the screen.

Rome was not built in a day; government will deliver - Koku Anyidoho

The Director of Communications at the Castle, Koku Anyidoho has stated that the fact that projects are not necessarily been undertaken in the nation’s capital does not mean that government is not working.

Mr. Anyidoho says government is focusing more on fulfilling the needs of the most deprived areas across the country.
Koku, who is with President Mills on his tour of the Eastern Region, was speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Wednesday about the visit.

According to him, the government is making sure that the developmental cake is spread across the nation so Accra cannot be the main focus;

He added that the government’s handiwork is being felt more in the rural areas where infrastructural development is going on heavily in the various districts and towns and people who have travelled widely in the regions can attest to that fact.

He cited projects that have been completed including the new Tarkwa Hospital, a new Midwifery Training School at Goaso and a Nursing Training College in Techiman all in the Brong Ahafo Region, Jirapa, Nandom, Lawra and other areas in the Upper East Region are benefiting from five new hospitals among others.

Koku Anyidoho stated that even though some people have refused to see what the President is doing, after President Mills’ first four years, all his good works will be known.

He said President Mills is not distracted by the insults and jokes aimed at tarnishing his reputation and remains focused and determined to fulfill his Better Ghana agenda in his first term in office.

He urged people to be patient with President Mills because Rome was not built in a day and that by the time the four years is over, the government would have delivered on its promises.

Koku Anyidoho however rubbished allegations that President Mills is only undertaking developmental projects in some parts of the region because it is a strong hold of the opposition NPP.

He disclosed that previously unmotorable roads in the Akyem Abuakwa constituency, considered to be NPP flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo’s stronghold, have been worked on, while a steel bridge has been constructed in Abuakwa Adukrom among other projects including educational infrastructure, health facilities that have been carried out or are yet to be commenced in the Region.

Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Julius Debrah also debunked the allegation saying the projects have been spread across the region and that President Mills’ visit during which he will commission various developmental projects will prove that assertion wrong.

He said even though the Region is regarded as a strong hold of the NPP, thousands of people welcomed President Mills on Tuesday when he began his visit.

Mr. Debrah also disclosed that they are putting together a strategy that will see them capture the Eastern Region in the 2012 elections.

May poll shows Nana Addo still in the lead to win elections

A Senior Researcher at research institution, Synovate Ghana, William Mensah, says if elections were to be conducted by today May 31, flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will triumph over President Mills with 43 percent as against President Mills’ 38 percent.

Mr. Mensah’s outfit, formerly known as Steadman, says research it conducted across the country in May shows that Nana Akufo-Addo is the favourite of people to be President of Ghana.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, Mr. Mensah said recent power struggles and verbal sparring in the NDC has not really boosted the chances of the NPP as Nana Addo will win only 43 percent which is quite below the required 50 plus one percent a presidential candidate needs to win an election.

Synovate Ghana conducted a similar research in April this year which put Nana Akufo-Addo in the lead with 43% with President Mills closely behind with 41%.

The May research shows that while Nana Akufo - Addo’s figures have remained constant, President Mills has lost some ground with his percentage reduced to 38%.

The research also revealed that with the exception of the Central Region, Nana Akufo-Addo will win almost all the regions considered to be swing regions in elections.

The figures show that Nana Addo will win 35% as against President Mills’ 32% in the Greater Accra Region, 51% as against 35% in the Brong Ahafo Region, 57% as against 35% while in the Central Region, President Mills scores 44% as against 40% for Nana Addo.

It must indeed be good times for the NPP as the figures also show that the NPP leads in the most favourite party in the country, 44% while the NDC scored 38%.

In the run-up to the NDC Delegates Congress in July Synovate’s research shows that President Mills will win the leadership slot by 70% whiles Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings would score 16%.

The research also discovered that unemployment tops the most serious problems facing Ghanaians today with 39% with high cost of food and fuel coming in second and bribery and corruption coming in third.

About 2,000 Ghanaians, both male and female, who are 18 years and above were interviewed for the survey with about 93% of the interviewees being registered voters.

Only one interview was carried out per household and each respondent spoke for themselves.
