May poll shows Nana Addo still in the lead to win elections

A Senior Researcher at research institution, Synovate Ghana, William Mensah, says if elections were to be conducted by today May 31, flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will triumph over President Mills with 43 percent as against President Mills’ 38 percent.

Mr. Mensah’s outfit, formerly known as Steadman, says research it conducted across the country in May shows that Nana Akufo-Addo is the favourite of people to be President of Ghana.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, Mr. Mensah said recent power struggles and verbal sparring in the NDC has not really boosted the chances of the NPP as Nana Addo will win only 43 percent which is quite below the required 50 plus one percent a presidential candidate needs to win an election.

Synovate Ghana conducted a similar research in April this year which put Nana Akufo-Addo in the lead with 43% with President Mills closely behind with 41%.

The May research shows that while Nana Akufo - Addo’s figures have remained constant, President Mills has lost some ground with his percentage reduced to 38%.

The research also revealed that with the exception of the Central Region, Nana Akufo-Addo will win almost all the regions considered to be swing regions in elections.

The figures show that Nana Addo will win 35% as against President Mills’ 32% in the Greater Accra Region, 51% as against 35% in the Brong Ahafo Region, 57% as against 35% while in the Central Region, President Mills scores 44% as against 40% for Nana Addo.

It must indeed be good times for the NPP as the figures also show that the NPP leads in the most favourite party in the country, 44% while the NDC scored 38%.

In the run-up to the NDC Delegates Congress in July Synovate’s research shows that President Mills will win the leadership slot by 70% whiles Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings would score 16%.

The research also discovered that unemployment tops the most serious problems facing Ghanaians today with 39% with high cost of food and fuel coming in second and bribery and corruption coming in third.

About 2,000 Ghanaians, both male and female, who are 18 years and above were interviewed for the survey with about 93% of the interviewees being registered voters.

Only one interview was carried out per household and each respondent spoke for themselves.
