The Assistant Inspector of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of Ghana Police Service, ASP Alexander Obeng says bus drivers are the most undisciplined roads users in the country.
ASP Obeng stated that recent accident cases recorded have revealed that drivers of buses, especially VIP buses, do not abide by road regulations thus causing avoidable accidents.
ASP Alexander Obeng made these revelations in an interview with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem programme on Thursday.
He disclosed that about 895 deaths were recorded through motor accidents nationwide from January to May 31 this year. He said 5,023 vehicles were involved in the accidents.
ASP Alexander Obeng said out of the 5,023 accident cases recorded within the period, 895 of them were fatal, 797 were serious and 1,792 were minor cases, 778 pedestrians were knocked down while 5,185 persons received injuries.
He explained that most causes of motor accidents included speeding, talking on phone while driving and fatigue.
He added that the accidents were caused by speeding, drunk-driving, overloading of vehicles and wrongful overtaking among other factors, and promised that the police would strictly enforce road and traffic regulations to make roads safe.
According to him, road safety had become public health and development issues, which must concern policy makers if Ghana was to attain a single digit fatality target by 2015.
In a related development, Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, Mr. Francis Addai-Nimo has stated that the country annually loses about GHC 1 billion through motor accidents.
He expressed the fear that if motorists continue to exhibit poor driving regulations the nation will have to channel virtually its financial commitments to the road sector, making the government lose concentration on other important sectors.
Mr. Francis Addai-Nimo urged the Ministry of Roads and Highways to increase the practice of routine maintenance on deplorable roads especially during the rainy season.
He also charges on the National Road Safety Commission to re-educate motorists on the basic safety measures on the road to prevent the high number of road accident cases.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Road and Transport, Kofi Boapong has described the recent high number of accident cases as disturbing for a third world country like Ghana.
Mr. Boampong who also spoke on Dwaso Nsem, said contractors lack financial assistance to enable them smoothly execute their contracts. Kofi Boapong admits that there is the need for authorities of the national road safety should re-educate motorist and consistently remind them of the regulations on the road.
He called on the Media to complement efforts of the National Road Safety Commission in educating prospective road users at lorry stations, on the highways and at accident prone areas in the country.

NDC TO ORGANISE FUND RAISING ON SATURDAY FOR CONGRESS
The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Boateng Gyan says as part of their preparation towards a peaceful congress, the party will organize a fund raising ceremony to finance the party for their congress.
Yaw Boateng Gyan tells Adom news that Executives of the party will use the event as an opportunity to unity the party and create a friendly atmosphere for party members.
He explains that the Vetting committee has finish with the vetting of the two presidential aspirants for the leadership position.
He says the results of the vetting will be release on Friday. He tells Adom news that currently executives of the party are meeting at the party headquarters to drive a peaceful ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations officer of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur says security arranges are all set for the upcoming NDC congress as well as subsequent events towards the big day.
He explains that the Police command has assigned quite a number of policemen at the venues to prevent likely skirmishes that might occur.

STUDENT STAB COLLEAGUE ON CAMPUS
A first year student at the Edwuraman Senior High has stabbed his colleague to death over augment on the subject about the beauty of a girl.
The deceased Robert Mensah was stabbed by his colleague Boadi Stephen after the deceased said the girl they had met on their way to the classroom was not beautiful enough to attract the attention of his classmates.
Boadi’s comments is said to have resulted in a heated argument resulting in a scuffle and eventually stabbing of Mensah by Boadi.
The Headmaster of the Edwuraman SHS, Mr. Hulede confirmed the story to Adom news and explains that the two first years’ were until the unfortunate incident very close friends adding that no one had the slightest suspicion that this could happen.
The incident has been reported to the Ejisu Police station for further investigations to be carried.

MZBEL GRANTED GHC2000 BAIL
Hiplife star Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has been granted bail of GHC2000 after her counsel appeal against the remand of the celebrity.
At the Human right high court today, Justice P U Derry decided to give free Mzbel and two other accomplices with one sureity each that they would appear before the court.
The counsel has adjourned the case to the Friday 10 th of June.
Mzbel was remanded in police custody following an order by an Accra Motor Court that she and two others be remanded for assaulting a police officer.
The celebrated Ghanaian songstress, together with Maxwell Mensah, a driver, and Emmanuel Edem Nordzor, a student, were granted bail of GHC2000 each.

FONKAR ACCUSES GAME OF TRYING TO DISRUPT NANA KONADU’S VETTING
The Operations Manager of the Friends of Nana Konadu Rawlings (FONKAR), Ernest Owusu Bempah, has alleged that some members of President Mills’ campaign team, Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME), tried to disrupt the vetting of the former First Lady today with a demonstration.
According to Owusu Bempah, some of the people who embarked on the demonstration mentioned the spokesperson of GAME, Barbara Serwah Asamoah; NDC National Organiser, Yaw Boateng Gyan and National Women’s Organiser, Anita De Sosoo as the brains behind the action.
The NDC commenced the vetting of the two presidential aspirants today starting with Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
The Vetting Committee was headed by Dr. Mary Grant and Majority leader Cletus Avoka.
Owusu Bempah states that the intervention of the supporters of Mrs. Nana Konadu Rawlings prevented the demonstrators from GAME from causing further intimidation to ruin the campaign of the former first lady.
