GHANA INTEGRITY INITIATIVE URGES GOVERNMENT TO IMPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE

A Policy Analyst at the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Alexis Dery has stated that recommendations from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) are bogus if government does not take steps to implement them.
He says corruption will not cease in public sectors if drastic steps are not taken to rid the system of it.
Mr. Dery’s comments come in the wake of revelations of misappropriation of state funds by some ministries at the sitting of the Public Accounts Committee.
He explains that successive governments have failed to enforce recommendations from the PAC sittings and that has allowed the corruption to go unchecked.
He tasks the government to strength institutions in other to tackle malfeasance in the public sector.

Alexis Dery also called on the government to initiate institutional reforms to tackle corruption in the public sector.

TEMA POLICE DENIES COLLECTING ‘MAD WOMAN’s MONEY

The Tema Police has denied collecting the money of the alleged Yoruba woman who was reported mentally challenged.
The Public Relations Officer of the Tema Police, Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson tells Adom News when her team got to Ashaiman the people wanted to take the money of the woman so the Police collected the money to prevent the resident from stealing it
She explains that the Yoruba woman who has spent the last 10 years begging was raising funds for her return to Nigeria.
Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson says the woman has been able to raise GH350 for her journey back home.

An eyewitness who is assisting Police investigations confirmed that some people tried to collect the money of the Yoruba woman because she could not speak any of the Ghanaian languages.
He spoke to Adom News

Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson stated that the Police will put the woman on the next available transport to Nigeria.

849 WASSCE STUDENTS TO KNOW THEIR FATE BY CLOSE OF THE WEEK
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Exams committee will meet tomorrow to decide the fate of the 849 students whose results were withheld.
The Principal Public Affairs Officer Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe stated that hopefully the results of the meeting will be known by the close of the week.
She made these comments when on behalf of WAEC she has released the provisional results of 133,679 out of 148,826 candidates who took the May/June 2011 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She also added that the entire results of all candidates presented by 81 schools have also been withheld.
According to Mrs. Teye-Cudjoe this is to allow them time to conduct investigations into suspected examination malpractices during the exams.
Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe told Adom News that the fate of the 81 schools will be known after results of the investigations conducted are released and the suspects identified.
The disclosure by WAEC has shocked several parents and students who were anxiously awaiting the results of their wards.
Speaking to Adom news Mrs. Agnes Teye Cudjoe blamed both teachers and students for the examination malpractices.
“Some of the reports gathered said some examiners and supervisors played indirect roles in the malpractice,” she added.

She revealed that this is the third time WAEC has recorded such high numbers of examination malpractices.
She said some of the students brought mobile phones, tore parts of the examination paper and entered with some other external materials to the exam hall.
Meanwhile, Former Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Michael Nsowah described as alarming withholding of results of 81 schools by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on suspicion of exams malpractice.
The former G.E.S boss and educationist has blamed the situation on the attitude of students towards examination where they always try to outwit the system by cheating. He accused students of not studying resulting in inadequate preparation for exams.
He was unhappy about the attitude of students particularly saying that no matter how hard teachers teach, the failure of students to learn will always frustrate their efforts.
Mr. Nsowah is therefore calling for collaborative efforts of Parents and teachers to help students prepare for all examinations to avoid all forms of examination irregularities to help curb the situation.
President of Ideal College, Mr. Joseph Asibu has accused WAEC of lack of supervision and improper syllabus as a contributory factor to the examination malpractices.
He explained that the some schools lack proper text books and a well defined syllabus to prepare for exams.
Some affected students Adom News spoke to denied allegations that they had involved themselves in any form of malpractices because supervisors were extra strict.

SANITY PREVAILS AT WASSA-ASIKUMA AFTER ROBBERS RAID

The Wassa-Asikuma Police in the Western Region say there has been calm and sanity in the community and its environs after armed robbers raided the community some few weeks ago making several people fled the area.
DSP Ben Yirenkye stated that the Police have been able to provide full security in the community to prevent such occurrences.
He said that the alleged armed robbers who raided the Wassa-Asikuma community have been granted bail because the court did not have enough evidence to prosecute them.
He said the 5 men were victims of circumstance.
The Wassa-Asikuma District Police Commander DSP Ben Yirenkye assured the general public that his outfit will investigate the whereabout of the robbers.
