The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourist Board, Julius Debrah has attributed yesterday’s stampede that killed three people at the La Pleasure Beach to authorities’ refusal to hand over the place to the Tourist Board for the smooth administration of the venue.
Julius Debrah disclosed that they have held several meetings with the management of the beach but they say the land belongs to them and that government wants to take away the land from them.
According to him, the Ghana Tourist Authority would have professionally managed the situation if they had been in charge.
Julius Debrah stated that the issue has been sent to National Security for the necessary decision to be taken.
He recommended that people should explore the country’s other tourist destinations rather than focusing on one sector.
Julius Debrah explains that the country has a lot of tourists’ attraction so people should travel more on holidays to prevent stampede at a particular venue.

GHANA SET TO BECOME MALARIA-FREE BY 2015
The Head of Malaria Control Programme in Ghana, Dr. Constance Bart-Plange believes that the country will be able to eradicate malaria by 2015 in line with the World Health Organisation vision.
She tells Adom News the country has been consistently recording fewer Malaria cases year on year over the past 10 years.
The Malaria Control Programme used this year’s World Malaria Day which fell today to screen some 400 residents of some areas in Accra for malaria and Dr. Bart-Plange says only 25 were founded to have malaria.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) say malaria is the biggest killer of children under the age of five (5) in sub-Saharan Africa and it kills about one million people worldwide every year.
Dr. Constance Bart-Plange cautioned medical experts not to confuse malaria with other diseases.

JOURNALISTS MUST HELP US-DCE
The newly elected District Chief Executive for Abura Asebu Kwamankese, William Arthur Mends says journalists have a role to play in the development of the nation.
He explains that journalists can assist by caution leaders in decision making at various levels.
The newly elected DCE says journalists should not always search for bad news to tell but also advice leaders especially their public statements.
William Arthur Mends reminded the media of their watch dog role in the country as stipulated by the 1992 constitution.
Speaking in an interview with our central regional reporter Isaac Okyem, William Arthur Mends says without the media the better Ghana agenda by the President will be a mirage.
He called on the people in the district to put behind their party affiliations and assist in the rapid development of the community.
William Mends says too much affiliations and loyalty to our various political parties have reflected in the low level commitment of individuals to the development of the country.
He therefore tasks the people in the central region to put their party colours behind and help in the course of development.

VEHICLES TO UNDERGO STRICT SCANNING IN EASTER
The National Chairman of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Ben Amoabeng says vehicles will go through strict scanning before they commute from their stations.
He explains that the council has received a gauge that detects the fitness of a vehicle hence it would be easier to determine which cars to be on the roads.
Ben Amoateng says vehicles which fail to pass the fitness test at the stations will not be allowed to operate.
According to him, these are measures to ensure smooth safety on the road during the Easter festivities.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) disclose that about 540 motor accident deaths were recorded in first quarter of 2011.
But the national chairman of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating council, Ben Amoabeng was optimistic that the strict measures have been taken to reduce the accidents on the roads.
Meanwhile, the deputy Minister of Health, Rojo Mettle Nunoo has reminded the general public of cholera prevention during the Easter festivities.
He says the public should be mindful of the use of food vendors, toilet facilities and safe washing practices.
Rojo Mettle-Nunoo says the Ministry has lost count of the number of lives lost hence people should be cautious in this festive season.
